Troy and I put this track together, and I think we contributed fairly equally; he played most of the instruments and painstakingly pored over dozens of mixes. I played with his dog for about half an hour.
I wrote this song about Dana Anderson in the weeks after his death. I suspect that there will be dozens of songs about the guy. He deserves every one of them and they're all going to be great.
I wanted my contribution to be something that would make him hit me in the shoulder and call me a jackass, so I compared him to Jesus Christ.
If you have people around you that might be having a tough time -- and you certainly do -- reach out to them and see if they need anything. Give them a stupid reason to come over and hang out for a while.

lyrics
If Jesus was from Granite City
Might be rough around the edges, but he’d sing real pretty
Talking shit from the back of the bar
Talking shit in the back of my car
Granite City Jesus Christ
Looks like hell, but he cleans up nice
Played a song I wish I could write
Hear him singing at the end of the night
And he sings all night long
All night long
He came to sing, not to save
Might hear him preach, but he will not pray
Moth-pecked shirt from his high school days
He says, “here’s a new one, I haven’t played"
All night long, all night long
All those nights you thought nobody was listening
There was someone in the back of the bar
Making jokes and catching every other line
To think about later in their car
I broke down in Granite town
Called AAA and I waited ‘round
Put on a song, and it sounded real nice
By the Granite City Jesus Christ

Troy Brennigmeyer - Lap steel, electric guitar, bass, keyboards, drum sequencing, mixing.
John Krane - Vocals, acoustic guitar, one synth that's mixed real, real quiet, you probably didn't even notice it but John thinks it added something.
Carl's songs are incredibly literate and feature great melodies. He sort of sounds like Andrew Bird, except with more of a jazzy take on things, and his songs all have a certain warmth to them. John Krane
